Seagate apparently went ahead of its planned CES announcement and today officially unveiled the world’s thinnest 2.5-inch hard disk drive. Measuring just 7mm tall rather than the usual 9.5mm, the Momentus Thin drive is aimed at the increasingly popular ultra-thin notebooks and will come in 160GB and 250GB capacities.

While some laptop manufacturers have opted for 1.8-inch drives to help shave a few millimeters off their products, these new storage devices from Seagate are supposedly far cheaper to produce and should enable a new breed of entry-level thin notebooks
and netbooks. Besides offering a slimmer profile, the 2.5-inch disks still perform at typical notebook speeds with a SATA II interface, 5,400RPM spindle speeds and an 8MB cache.
No prices were disclosed. The company is first offering the drive to OEMs and expects to ship them in January.

  • Corsair launches 24GB Dominator DDR3 memory kit

Not that you’ll be needing such extreme amounts of memory for your gaming rig anytime soon but Corsair has just launched a new 24GB kit under its Dominator series. Designed and tested for use on Intel’s
X58 platform, the triple-channel kit consists of six 4GB modules clocked at 1,333MHz with latencies of 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V voltage.

Each module features Corsair’s patented DHX+ heatsinks and the company is tossing in a Dominator Airflow cooler equipped with a duo of 60mm fans for good measure. Although the branding suggests this 24GB kit is aimed at gamers and performance enthusiasts, Corsair says the new set is actually designed for workstation users and those in the computational research, HD digital content creation, or virtualization fields.

Indeed the value of a 24GB DDR3 RAM kit is practically non-existent in home environments, and the $1,349.99 it costs will definitely be better spent elsewhere if you are looking for a performance boost. In any case, the new memory kit is available right now from Corsair’s online store and comes backed by a lifetime warranty.

  • Intel confirms launch of new Core i3, i5 parts at CES

Intel has confirmed it will launch its first 32nm processors
for desktops and laptops on January 7 at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. A total of 17 processors will be revealed in a variety of speeds, including new Core i3 and Core i5 parts that will join their older and more powerful Core i7 siblings.

intel-core-i5-mobileThe company released a couple of teaser images showing an Arrandale mobile and Clarkdale desktop processor. Both are based on the same Westmere design, which includes one 32nm die with two Nehalem microprocessor cores, and another 45nm die with the memory controller and integrated graphics processor — all in the same package. The new Core i3 and Core i5 chips will be able to handle as many as four threads at once via Hyperthreading, but only the latter will have Turbo Boost to dynamically adjust clock speeds as required.

Intel didn’t get into specific performance and pricing details. However, we already have some idea of what to expect thanks in no small part to early retail listings, roadmap leaks, even a few unofficial benchmarks.
