Before a deafening crowd of 18676 fans at Chicago Stadium, the Bulls defeated the Pistons, 94-83, in the opening game of the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference championship series. Jordan, whose election as the league’s most valuable player will be announced Monday, was held to 22 points, 9 points below his playoff average, on 6-for-15 shooting along with three boards, three steals and six assists. But Jordan’s teammates stepped forward — the Bulls’ bench combined for 30 points and starters Scottie Pippen (18 points), Bill Cartwright (16 points) and Horace Grant (10 rebounds) stood up to Detroit’s physical play, holding off the Pistons whenever they threatened to take control. “I had a bad game, but we still won,” Jordan said afterward. “I think that shows the maturity of our team. I think this shows them that we’ve got a team, instead of a one-man situation.” Today’s game set the tone for the remainder of the series. There was very little open-court play, and there were very few scintillating offensive moves. This series will be physical. Bodies will fly. Tempers will flare. Skin will bleed. Character will be tested. There were times away from the ball when the action resembled a rugby scrum. Players shoved, held and did whatever else they felt they could get away with. “It’s a different style of ball when you play us,” said Mark Aguirre, who led the Pistons with 25 points. “They’re not going to be able to play us like Philly, where they got a lot of running and

Wow if this game happens today the Detroit would have at least 20 flagrant fouls. Look at the physical defense by the Detroit Pistons over MJ. The Golden Era of NBA. Today’s players are a bunch of sissies and Sterns spoiled babies, touch them and you will get a foul or even worst a technical flagrant foul

I’d rather watch these old games on here than watch a game on TV today. That’s how much the NBA has dropped off.

You know how they used to say that Dennis was a master of getting into people’s head mentally? I disagree. I think MJ was the master of that. Look at the play 3:34 . Dennis had fouled MJ in the previous baskets. on that play MJ blows by Dennis and puts it in the hoop and comes back telling him all about it. On defense, Dennis already lost his mind and is looking for physical contact with MJ and pushes him and gets in his face. MJ doesn’t back down either..

cant believe you are still around. i admire your loyalty. i think detriot had enough rings. they won two and they almost wanted to quit playing basketball, what a boring game for them.haha

Detroit had no chance in this series; they knew it was over prior to it starting. This series was actually the worse of the previous 3 (1988-1990). Detroit never showed up. Take a look at the 1990 series vs. this series and pay attention to how Detroit played. They were hungrier the year before and here they are so passive. It’s like they never wanted to play.

Great memories. I think Det. knew it was over after the first game.

Pistons lost because the core unit was broken up. They should have kept Rick Mahorn

  11. moybutter says:

08:19 that would have been a Flagrant 2 in today’s league!

the pistons run started in 1986 they played the lakers in the finals in 1988 and they had to get passed the celtics so this pistons team was on the end of the road it was mike’s turn.

  14. getyoasshome says:

mike even said that joe dumars locked him up better than anyone ever did. the pistons knew what to do but it was the bulls turn to take over just like the pistons had to take it from boston.

I hate how people downplay the Bulls by calling this Piston team old. The Pistons were still great defensively, had won 2 rings in 89 and 90. the 91 team was a bit weaker due to isiah’s injury but the bulls absolutely dominated them. isiah was still an all star caliber player, joe d was in his defensive prime etc. Bulls just needed pippen and grant to mature and grow. MJ took care of the rest.

  20. screwopenborders says:

    no foul 5:39 on pippen.

5 years after this Jordan and Rodman would become teammates.

  22. superBernard49 says:

Wow look at Rodman. Black hair and no tattoos. Still looks like a killer though.

  23. mjlover23 says:

Thank you for the videos!!! Brings me back to when I tried to copy every single move MJ and Scottie Pippen made! I didn’t say I did them like they did, I said “I TRIED”! LOL!

  24. triklops says:

How cool is that MJ-tap on Rodman after there little conversation !!! Class !!!!

  25. triklops says:

“…..going at each other”…..a phrase Marv Albert does not have to use anymore because the intensity has gone down so much. I could not believe my eyes when I saw Lebron’s Cavs just go down like that….no fight, no hard fouls, no messages sent….nothing !!! Just watching the game fade away !!!
