Who’s to say love and loneliness are separate things? The song is actually based entirely on Aristophanes speech in the Symposium, where he describes how love originates from the severing of those 8-limb bodies, the severing of a soul. I mean no disrespect, but if the movie and this song particularly hit you deeply, you would probably take in a lot from reading Plato’s Symposium.

the play is better than the movie, but both are still amazing and beautiful

My Ancient Greek class read the Symposium, which has the story about the people joined together back-to-back rolling around and getting split in half. I’m doubly educated now, having read Plato and seen Hedwig!

  13. Jc2theW says:

probably one of the most beautiful songs ever created.
    Thank you Hedwig

  14. HinataOfTheSand says:

I love this movie too but I thought the song ment more about soul mates o-o and also loneliness

  15. Flipfloppity says:

This is a beautiful song. But it has nothing to do with love. This song is about the origin of loneliness. Anyone who watches or listens to this and thinks it’s about love or sexuality has missed the point. Hedwig’s story is about the sacrifices s/he makes to try and escape loneliness, and the reality that sometimes things just don’t go the way you planned.

My heart breaks a little bit every time I see this film, and that’s why I love it. Hedwig is a modern hero and a modern heroine.

…It’s the pain… I love freedom to love … It’s the most important, to live in freedom

  17. brunoblood says:

    That’s the pain
That cuts a straight line down through the heart
    We call it love

The origin of love ~ the origin of duality… Each one of us has pieces of both sexes. Therefore to return to The Love they owe to balance these energies inside.
    =)

    great video, thanks for uploading!

  24. Lestatzak says:

who cares! gay not gay be what you want! the song is beautiful who cares about these things its not effecting you, just listen to an amazing song and be happy.

  25. theodorejamesboak says:

Why should the thought of homosexuality even come into one’s head ? It’s a beautiful story that explains the ‘origin of love’ in an artful and mythical way. absolutely stunning….
