Question by Steve: What kind of apple is good for this recipe?
For Thanksgiving, I’m making some special cinnamon apples that I always make for the holidays, but I’m not sure what kind of apple to use. I’m essentially cutting them into pieces, throwing them in a sautee pan, and cooking them in brown sugar and cinnamon. Keeping that in mind, would I want a sweeter type of apple, or more tart? If you have a specific type that you think will go well in this kind of recipe, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I’d go with Grannt Smith Apples. They’re excellent for cooking with and their slight tartness will go will with the cinnamon and brown sugar :)

United States Potato Board Launches Recipe Photo Contest

Submit an Original, Mouth-Watering Twice Baked Potato Photo for the Chance to Win $ 500; Visit Facebook.com/PotatoesTatersAndSpuds for Details

PR Newswire — February 7, 2011

DENVER, Feb. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — The United States Potato Board (USPB) has teamed up with The Nutrition Twins, registered dieticians and personal trainers Lyssie and Tammy Lakatos, to remind potato lovers everywhere why potatoes are “twice” as smart and to announce an easy-to-enter recipe photo contest.

As the Twins explain, “Twice baked potatoes are twice as fun! Plus, you get twice the nutritional punch as potatoes are loaded with vitamin C and potassium.” Not only that, one medium-size (5.3 ounce) skin-on potato contains just 110 calories per serving and contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

In the Twice Baked, Twice as Smart Facebook Recipe Photo Contest, potato lovers are invited to submit their best, most mouth-watering, original twice baked potato photo for a chance to win a $ 500 VISA gift card and a signed copy of the Nutrition Twins’ new book, The Secret to Skinny. The contest Runner-Up will receive a $ 50 VISA gift card and a signed copy of The Secret to Skinny.

Including the twice baked recipe is optional, but entrants are required to describe their twice baked creation with a creative photo caption. Entries will be narrowed down to the top five by a consumer vote on Facebook and The Nutrition Twins will serve as contest judges to select the Grand Prize winner and Runner-Up.

To enter the contest, visit the USPB’s Facebook page, “Potatoes, Taters and Spuds,” and click on the “Photo Contest” tab at the top of the page. The contest is open to U.S. residents age 18 and over. Official rules can be found on the USPB’s Facebook page.

Those looking for inspiration to get started can visit www.potatogoodness.com to see five new Twice Baked Potato recipes, along with a host of additional healthy potato recipes, how-to cooking videos and potato nutrition information.
