Startup: an emotional roller coaster ride

February was a great month for my startup (Visual Website Optimizer). All metrics that you can care about worked in our favo. Increase in number of customers, revenues, users (and yes, Twitter followers too). We also hired our first employee and are looking forward to hiring 2 more. (Please apply if you are in Delhi and someone you know is in Delhi and wants to work with us).

If everything seems great, why do I call this an emotional roller coaster? Well, that’s because just like a real roller coaster there is always a lingering fear that we may not be in existence 12 months down the line. When established companies such as MySpace with hundreds of employees face uncertainty, how can our small team afford to be complacent.

In a single day, we get to see so many emotions. Consider my typical work day:

  • Wake up at 10 am (read below why I wake up at 10 am, we work from India during US hours since most of our customers are in US and UK). Check emails for an hour or so.
  • Worst feeling ever: 2 customers want to cancel accounts. One says they will resume account in 3 months after they revamp their website. Other says we are bit expensive. Sh*t, if customers keep cancelling accounts we will be out of business soon!.
  • Best feeling ever: wuhuu!! Smashing Mag tweeted about our new case study, 30 new trial signups and 4 trial users upgraded last night. Wow, one of them chose our $ 729/month enterprise plan. Life couldn’t be better.
  • Eat breakfast, dress up and reach office about 12:30 pm
  • Reality kicks in: duh, 15 new support emails to reply. Think: how can we reduce ever growing support load so we can focus on product. Team and me gets to work on solving support.
  • Clear up inbox by 2 pm. Bored, what to do next?
  • Open todo list and see pending tasks. OK, so today I need to write a new case study on our blog, write a guest post for another blog, design a feedback survey and write a newsletter. Phew! that’s a lot of work for today.
  • It’s OK to procrastinate a bit. Before diving into work, open Hacker News. 30 minutes pass in a blink of an eye.
  • Real work: write case study and publish it (1 hour). Write a newsletter and send it using Mailchimp (30 minutes)
  • 5 pm: time for lunch. The team hangs out at one of the restaurants nearby. Wonder why don’t they change menu. God knows I am sick of eating Dal-Roti Thali (Noth Indian) or Noodles (Chinese) or Idli-Vada (South Indian).
  • Back from lunch: life is bad, 2 people flagged newsletter as spam (we are not spammers. we follow don’t be evil and newsletter was informative and, heck, had a clear Unsubscribe button.). Life is also good, the case study published today got 50 retweets with 150 visitors on the website right now!
  • 5:30 pm have evening tea and see calendar for appointments today.
  • OK great, have two one hour long demos on Webex. One with a Fortune 500 company, another with a web agency. Meanwhile, more mails in inbox. Clearing up inbox takes time.
  • 6:30 pm: phew, time for business strategy and product planning. We need to hire more perople, think how to find hackers / programmers in Delhi? Fire a few emails for job postings. We need to introduce a new feature: behavioral targeting. Discuss with team, draft a plan, set timelines. What about our SEO, analytics and A/B tests? Fire up Google Analytics and Visual Website Optimizer. Check how we are doing on different fronts. How are we doing on paid traffic front? Fire up Adwords and Facebook Ads and see performance of campaigns. We are losing money on Adwords! Pause them for a while.
  • It is 8:30 pm already and I have a demo at 9 pm (about 11 am EST)! Rush to home.
  • At home, it is 9 pm so I give 1 hour long demo to Fortune 500 company via webex. They are impressed and may sign up soon. Holy smokes, thank god.
  • 10 pm: have dinner in a rush. OMG, have a demo at 10:30 pm too! How can I forget it?
  • It is 10:30 pm — another 1 hour long demo via webex. Think: why can’t these guys simply watch a video or signup for free 30 day trial. Visual Website Optimizer is pretty straightforward so why do they need a demo. Anyway, demo over. They say they will signup for $ 49/month. Duh, should I feel happy?
  • 11:30 pm — chat with the team. They inform that today our servers broke records and are doing a peak performance of 730 requests per second. OMG, need to add one more server ASAP. Sparsh (our CTO) purchases a new server from Linode and configures it. It is ready to be deployed. Work with the team for the whole time to ensure there is no downtime. It’s 1 am already. The new server is up and ready. Phew, life is good! Our servers are processing more than 1 billion pageviews per month. A momentary feeling of pride.
  • 1 am: more mails. People want to schedule demos, feature requests, billing questions, advice on what to test, partnerships, discounts and special offers.
  • 2 am: time for some entertainment. Check Hacker News, Oatmeal, read a book and watch some funny videos / TV shows.
  • 2:30 am — sleep! (Still having some nagging feelings: will our revenue increase next month? how can we increase active usage?)
  • 2:30 am to 10 am: get new product and feature ideas in dreams (just joking! barring a few days when a US customer calls at an odd Indian hour, I usually sleep well)

Needless to say, even a single day in startup life is a roller coaster ride.

Customise Your Ride With Chrome Rims

Customising your ride may start with a new paint job and modding the specs but it won’t be complete without a set of shiny chrome rims! Most rims are made from an aluminium and magnesium alloy which is strong but light, but other alloys are also used. The width of rims varies from very narrow for bikes and motorcycles to very wide for large trucks. The width of the rim influences the comfort of the ride as wider rims, although more stable produce more vibration. Less stable narrower rims lead to poorer handling.

Chrome rims, although they have no practical purpose are still much sought after. They enhance the look of the vehicle in a way that no other part can. Some people do prefer the look of rims painted to match the vehicle but the majority like the shiny, flashy look of chrome plated rims. Other parts of the vehicle also benefit from the decorative effects of chrome plating, bumpers, mirrors and exhausts for instance. as the shiny surface, especially when reflecting sunlight or other bright lights is indeed aesthetically pleasing. Chrome rims have been highly sought after and made popular by celebrities and artists who can afford the often hefty price tag that a full set of top of the range chrome rims comes with. Some chrome rims have been sold for as much as 00 per rim!

Steel and aluminium alloy is usually used for the best rims being superior to steel alone. This alloy is stronger and lighter which gives better vehicle performance. Aluminium is a lighter metal than steel and used as an alloy the lighter rims give improved steering ability of the vehicle. It is possible to get a similar look for less cost by using a steel wheel painted to give a silvery finish but chrome plated rims will keep their looks and last much longer. The electroplating process is much more involved and costly than simply painting a steel wheel hence the higher cost of the finished chrome rim.

Caring for Your Alloy Rims

Chrome alloy rims can be easily cared for by shampooing with a mild car shampoo and rinsing off carefully. Dry with a soft cloth so as not to scratch the chrome finish. If the rims are still dirty use a specially made chrome cleaner. Other types of cleaners should not be used as they can easily cause damage. Once dry it is a good idea to smear a very thin layer of car wax on the chrome. This will collect dust and other debris which will be easily removed later without damage to the chrome. You should also use a protective coat of wax on other chrome car parts too.

Try not to use automatic car washes as the harsh detergents used will lead to damage to the chrome and the mechanical action can also lead to scratches. Never use cleaners not specifically made for chrome on your rims as they often contain acid which can damage the finish and dull the chrome.

Not only is chrome trim cost-effective, but it also adds a nice flourish of class to most any ride very, very quickly. Every vehicle could use a splash of chrome here or there to give it a little edge. Thus, it all comes down to deciding where to put the chrome accessories that make the stylish difference you’re looking for.

A Quick Chrome Trim Overview

What is chrome trim? Just what it sounds like. Kind of. Chrome trim actually refers to a wide variety of products that are either chrome-plated or coated in chrome. Normally, these products are comprised of stainless steel or high-yielding ABS plastic with chrome added on later. As you can imagine, stainless steel chrome pieces are always in demand, but there are many fine offerings of ABS plastic trimmings that get the job done as well. One of chrome’s biggest strengths is its versatility. Kind of like wearing black, white, or beige, chrome goes with everything. So there is no need to worry about a “match.” That is one of its most alluring characteristics for those of us whom outside of our automotive desires are “fashionably challenged.” We might be unsure as to what color tie goes with a light-blue dress shirt, but we have an idea what looks good on our cars. And chrome accessories fit that bill perfectly. No matter the color scheme of your roadburner, chrome trim has a feverish tendency to either blend in the details or stand out with stark radiance. It just all depends on what you’re going for.

If you drive a Cadillac CTS for instance, your chrome accessory desires might be different from someone who sits behind a Honda Accord. And someone who rides a Chevy Silverado probably has different values than someone who controls a Dodge Challenger. The exterior packaging of your vehicle should have a say in where you decide to place your accents. Chrome accessories are there to enhance your vehicle’s personality and draw more life out of it. You don’t want to just make up places to cover with chrome. But some of this legwork is thankfully, taken out of your hands. Chrome accessories come in different shapes and sizes, each designed to outline a specific area of your ride.

Pillar Posts & Mirror Covers

When you first hear the term “pillar posts”, if unfamiliar you may expect a log or pole that is holding up some type of vast structure. After all, that’s what a pillar is. But pillar posts are actually extremely popular pieces of chrome trim that adhere to the spacing between the windows of your doors. Instead of sealant (ugh) or the original body color providing the gap between your side-view windows, pillar posts unveil a dynamic brushstroke of gleaming chrome-plated stainless steel. When executed on the right car or truck, pillar posts provide a very contrasting difference to the rest of the exterior. Many cars are “hooked up” with chrome pillar posts at car shows and exhibitions primarily because they elicit such a visually stimulating image.

Another hot commodity is chrome mirror covers. Mirror covers are perhaps one of the more important chrome upgrades because they play a vital role in upping the style on what is really a very underestimated part of your vehicle. Sometimes, it is even hard for me to understand how people don’t see this! Your side-view mirrors stick out! They are the one part of your vehicle’s body that is truly 3D at all times. Why so many drivers neglect them, I’ll never know. To me, they’re my favorite place to add some glare, and are now the first thing I look for when I see a car that is supposedly “customized.” I recommend looking into chrome mirror covers for your beast right away.

Door Handles & Window Visors

We’ll keep rolling right along and look at two more prized chrome accessories, and those are door handles and window visors. Chrome door handles are a delightfully easy way to spruce things up in a hurry and add a sprinkle of luxury to your doors. If you’re vying for some extra attention, so to speak, then chrome door handles are an excellent idea. Like most chrome accessories, door handles just stick right on, and are ready to go in moments. On the other hand, we have chrome window visors. Chrome window visors offer more than just some extra shine. Chrome window visors provide solid protection against rain and snow coming down off of your roof and impeding your vision. Many drivers enjoy chrome window visors because it is a two-for-one kind of deal. They get to toss some flash onto their ride with the benefit of ratcheting up their driving safety. It is a “win-win” situation.

Chrome Trim = Options

Nowadays, there are countless avenues drivers can explore. Taillight bezels, fender trim, gas caps, hood accents, and pedals are all viable options for even the most savvy of auto consumers. Any one of these items can open the floodgates of custom fashion for your model, and you shouldn’t take that lightly. Chances are, you have thought about going with a piece of chrome plated steel or ABS at one point or another. Chrome accessories are almost all very inexpensive and easy to install. Most reputable chrome trim manufacturers, like Putco® or QAA include specialized 3M adhesive backings on each chrome product. This is a huge advantage, as this automotive adhesive allows for lightening-fast installation as well as concrete fitment that lasts longer than you will even own your car. As a matter of fact, most, if not all of these chrome accessories come supported by warranties to this effect.

There are just so many different ways to get creative for almost all makes and models that no driver should be left behind when searching for the style that suits them most. Chrome gives you the ability to make a luxury ride appear even more elegant and help a racing model reflect even more aggression. Or simply elevate your “plain” family sedan into a blustery new world of custom enjoyment. It doesn’t matter what type of road warrior you are. Maybe you don’t aspire to dazzle your ride up enough to enter it at SEMA. But everyone has a reason why they love their car and want it to strut around in all its glory. Choosing the right chrome accessories for your vehicle is a great way to rediscover what was so special about it in the first place.
